AI orchestration: why engineers are becoming system architects

When AI can write a function in seconds, the valuable skill moves up a level: deciding how models, tools, data and people fit together.

From writing code to composing systems

Modern AI features are rarely a single model call. They are chains: retrieve context, call a model, validate the output, use a tool, store the result, ask a human when needed. Each step can fail in its own way.

Orchestration is the discipline of designing that flow so it is observable, recoverable and cheap enough to run every day.

What the engineer now owns

The job shifts from 'make it work' to 'make it dependable'.

  • Clear boundaries between deterministic code and probabilistic model output.
  • Structured outputs and validation instead of trusting free text.
  • Timeouts, retries and fallbacks for every external call.
  • Cost and latency budgets per request.

const draft = await model.generate({ prompt, schema: InvoiceSchema });
const invoice = InvoiceSchema.safeParse(draft);
if (!invoice.success) return queueForReview(draft);
await saveInvoice(invoice.data);

Think like an architect

AI makes producing code cheaper; it does not make decisions cheaper. The engineers who stand out will be the ones who can explain why a system is shaped the way it is — and what happens when one of its parts misbehaves.

“The model is a component. The system is the product.”
